Powering the sustainable development for the Kingdom means having a sustainable source of Power as well as a sustainable distribution network infrastructure.
Sustainable Source of Power
Our transition from diesel generation to renewable energy is our progress towards achieving a sustainable power source for the Kingdom for generations to come.
Our current electricity generation method heavily relies on imported fossil fuels from overseas to generate electricity for Tonga. This means that every time countries from overseas raises fossil fuel prices, our electricity prices here in Tonga increases as well.
According to an article from Ecotricity, “globally we currently consume the equivalent of over 11 billion tonnes of oil from fossil fuels every year. Crude oil reserves are vanishing at a rate of more than 4 billion tonnes a year, oil deposits could run out in just over 53 years.”
Tonga Power alongside the government of Tonga realizes this problem and has set a target that by 2030, 70% all electricity generation sources will be generated from renewable energy sources. Currently we have invested in power from the wind and from the sun. Click here to find out more on our Renewable Energy Progress
Sustainable Network Infrastructure
We are currently in the implementation phase of upgrading our network to a more safe, reliable and resilient network for our people.
The network upgrade project has completed its 1st phase of upgrading all the rural and urban areas in the Tonga Village Network Upgrade Project. We are currently in the 2nd phase of the network upgrade project, upgrading the network in the central business district of Tonga, Nuku’alofa. This includes replacement of all old power poles, upgrading of power lines to ABC bundle cables which are safer and more resilient. Lastly service lines to from our power lines to your homes will be dug underground unlike the current service line connection which is an overhead connection.
Our electricity meters are currently upgraded to Smart Meters. Smart Meters can be managed from our office and reconnection and disconnection process for your electricity is more convenient and can be done in a click of a button. This means that if your power is disconnected, once you’ve paid your remaining bills, power can be connected from our office in an instant and you wont have to pay for a reconnection fee.
