8th Sept 2014

As part of the ongoing project for the Tonga Village Network Upgrade Project funded by the New Zealand Government with a key objective to improve accessibility, reliability and safety to the electricity distribution network of across 50 rural villages in Tongatapu. Tonga Power Ltd (TPL) is committed to building a better Kingdom for the people of Tonga by creating Health and Safety Awareness programs.

On Thursday 5th September, TPL visited Nukunuku Primary School headed by Makisi Tongamana in conjunction with the western branch of Tupou High School which Katalina Lutui is the Head Principal. The aim of the program is to educate students in primary and secondary level to learn, understand and to prevent risk of injuries, deaths through electrocutions and fires also to inculcate a sense of responsibility toward spreading the message of health and safety within the community.

The program started off with a welcoming speech and prayer by the Nukunuku Middle school, Head Tutor, Mr. Makameone Paea. The Distribution Network Assets Supervisor for TPL, Mr. Siaosi Vaka’uta, and his team- Ms. Finau Malu and Mr.Liuaki Maile educated students on all areas in health and safety in particular on all electricity warning signs, reflectors on power poles, ABC drums and power lines that are located in the villages for the village network upgrade project. During the session, safety information materials including brochures and leaflets were distributed to all during this very important session.

The Awareness Program in schools made it all possible through Tonga Power working together as one with the Nukunuku primary and middle school. TPL is looking to continuing on to other villages in the coming weeks in stages 2 and 3 of the village upgrade project.
